Scrabble & Word Play by Ron Drew

ScrabbleWord Play – The names of 3 European cities are hidden in the following sentence. All letters for the 3 cities are in consecutive order. Can you find them?

“Otto, slow down or this little boat will hit an iceberg, ending our lives.”

Scrabble anyone?

According to the dictionary the word scrabble means to scratch, grope, or search frantically for something, and that’s exactly what occurs when 2 determined players “scrabble” for a few extra points which may mean the difference between a win or a loss in the classic board game Scrabble.

As far as is known, the first use of the word scrabble came from the pen of Rudyard Kipling… “he fell scrabbling in the dirt crying for mercy.”

Scrabble is a game that is completely different every time you play it owing to the sanctioned word list of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary which contains over a hundred thousand words.

Warning – Scrabble has been known to be addictive. Let’s hope our players here at Cypress Cove, in their frantic quest for a win do not succumb to PARONOMANIA – an obscure word discovered by Pat Westover which means “a clinical obsession with word games.”

Answers to Word Play:
OSLO, NICE, BERGEN

Barbara’s Famous B-54 Jello Shots

Jello ShotsBy popular request, Barbara has agreed to share the recipes for a couple of her most popular concoctions. These recipes are very tasty, but fairly light on the alcohol. If you prefer a stronger shot, you can experiment with adding a bit more alcohol and a bit less of the filler, in this case, milk.

½ cup Toasted Almond Coffee Mate
½ cup cold milk
1 envelope Knox unflavored gelatin
1/6 cup Bailey’s Irish Cream
1/6 cup Kahlua
!/6 cup Amaretto
½ cup cold milk (yes, more milk)

Combine the Coffee Mate, ½ cup of milk and the Knox gelatin. Whisk well and let stand for three minutes. Place pan over medium heat, bringing it to a boil while whisking frequently. Set pan aside to cool for ten minutes. Add the Bailey’s Kahlua and Amaretto and ½ cup of milk. Whisk well, pour into small serving cups and chill until firm.

Next time … “Cult of the Minthe”.

Health Day, October 15

Health DayMark your calendar for Oct. 15th, because Cypress Cove will be having Health Day. What is Health Day you might ask? It’s a day when we have health professionals on hand to check for skin cancer, have a variety of ultrasound tests performed, and help out your fellow Cove residents and people in the community by donating blood for the Osceola County Blood Bank.

All the above are free, except for the ultrasound tests by Prevention Plus which a have a fee depending on which package you pick. The day gets started at 9 am with the Blood Mobile & Prevention Plus. (Flu shots are currently scheduled for November 12th at 10 am.)

Make plans to attend. It’s for your own good.

A Note From Regis

NoteFirst off, I’d like to welcome Tammy Carter as the new of owner of the massage and day spa located at the West Side Pool (formerly Relaxation Station). You may recognize her, she worked at Relaxation Station from 2001-2003 and she’s a former employee of Cypress Cove. She has worked at day spas and fitness centers in Florida and Georgia. She’s been a massage therapist since 1998. She is also an esthetician. Check out her menu of services at her website, or just stop by and say hello. Make an appointment by calling 407-961-9738 or 407-518-2603.

Next, I’d like to welcome back all our friends from up north. It’s been a long summer and once again starting in November all Saturday night dances will start at 7:00 pm, with a few exceptions here and there (New Years Eve, Mardi Gras, and few other weekends). Now you can come to the Lakeside Restaurant for dinner and dancing a little earlier.

We are also looking to start a model railroading club with the first meeting on Thursday November 16th to hammer out all the details, such as the day of the meeting and the direction the club will take.

We have the dance classes with Abner returning on November 9th at 7:00 pm for only $5 per person/ per lesson. Abner was here at the end of last year and was a big hit, so come on down and learn some new dance steps.

We also have contra dancing starting up on October 15th at 1:00 pm in the Clubhouse and happening every Sunday thereafter. And, we have already started the Cypress Cove Singles Club. We also have old favorites like the Computer Club, Chinese Wand, and Yoga returning in November. If anyone has any suggestions for some new winter themed activities, please don’t hesitate to stop by the activities office to let us know. Our door is always open.

See you next time…

Nude Art Show & Fantasy Festival, October 20-22

Nude Art ShowIt’s time once again to host our annual Festival of Nude Art, on October 21st & 22nd. Named “The Body Of Art,” the festival features nude artwork which often cannot be displayed at more mainstream art shows. Over 20 artists will be showing on the Lakefront lawn from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday. If you are an artist and would like to participate, you can download our f.a.q. and registration forms here.

We need lots of patrons so the Art Show will be open to the public and admission will be free both days. Support the artists and use the money you save to make a purchase.

At the same time, we are also hosting our second annual Fantasy Festival. We want to try and replicate the fun and excitement of Fantasy Fest right here at Cypress Cove.

On Friday we will have an afternoon Kickoff Party at the pool, a Meet the Artists Party, a Flashlight Flasher Nighttime Parade and a “Red Party” at Cheeks with DJ Xavier (wear something red – a hat, shoes, or body paint – get creative).

The fun doesn’t stop there. On Saturday we will also have a Body Painting Contest, a Fantasy Festival Parade (dress yourselves, your carts, or even your pets), another Pool Party, and finally, a Glow in the Dark Masquerade Ball with DJ Riptide, the Nude DJ’s.

Sunday will wrap up the weekend with relaxing music by the Pool with Danny.

The weekend will not only be full of great art, it will also be full of fun. Don’t miss out!

Nude Bike Rally & “Strip” Poker Run, October 13-15

Nude Bike Rally & Strip Poker RunThe feeling of the wind blowing through your hair, speeding along on your bike down the open road. There’s not a better feeling in the world. Well, there is one thing that could make it better, being nude while you’re doing it. I know you can’t do that on the open road, but you can do it right here at Cypress Cove with the return of our annual Nude Bike Rally & “Strip” Poker Run.

The weekend is jam packed with all kinds of great biker events. The weekend will kick off on Friday with Happy Hour and Biker Bar Trivia in the Lounge. Other weekend events include a Biker Deck Party and a Biker Block Party complete with BBQ, a Bike Show and live music. Of course, there will also be Biker Games to test the skills of the finest riders and a nude Bike Parade through the park.

If you’re feeling lucky, join in the annual Poker Run that will leave the Cove, run outside the park and end back at the Cove in time for the Biker Block Party. There will be an awards ceremony and a drawing for the 50/50 on Saturday night right before the Biker Dance at the Lakeside.

Book your room early and don’t forget to register. One phone call can take care of both these things. Call the Cove at 407-933-5870 to request a pre-registration form and schedule of events for the weekend to be mailed to you.

Hope to see you there! And as always: Ride Safe!!!

From Dean’s Desk

NoteIn the last issue I told you that we are moving away from a paper newsletter, to a digital one. Well, we are closer. After this “Cypress Knee” there is one more issue before the end of the year, and that will be the last full-format, paper version. We are already putting out an email newsletter, and that will continue, but in an expanded format. The “new” email Cypress Knee will still be produced weekly, and it will include the articles about special events and special interest groups that now only appear in the paper version. There will be links to a newsletter section of the website, where all the articles and the calendar will be available all the time. Articles will be left in this section until they are dated, or are superseded by an updated article. Anything that appears new on the website will be featured in the email letter.

We need you to sign up. We can’t send you email if we don’t have your email address, and after the first of the year we won’t be sending the traditional newsletter any longer. The easiest way to sign up is to visit our website and select the “Newsletter” link. You will see a very simple subscription form. If you get a new email address you can subscribe again using the same form.

If you don’t have a computer, or just must have a paper version for some other reason, you can still get it. It will not be in the current format, and will have somewhat less information than the email newsletter, but it will still inform you about upcoming events and other important information. What you will miss are the weekly updates and other timely information. To get the paper newsletter you must sign up for it. Call or write with your name and member number. We will mail to the address on file. We will not mail to non-members.

~

Readers of this newsletter know that Cypress Cove is a strong supporter of the American Association for Nude Recreation. We currently require all new Cove members to also join the AANR, although renewal is optional after the first year.  In the future we will be returning to required AANR membership for all Cypress Cove members, but we are giving you lots of notice. There will be no change in 2007, but starting in January of 2008 renewals as well as new memberships will include AANR membership. Members who have AANR membership through another club will not have to pay for AANR though Cypress Cove.

~

As odd as it seems, we are still suffering fresh damage from the hurricanes of 2004. The violent shaking caused by storm winds can do damage to tree roots even though the tree is left standing, and that appears to have been the case with several trees in the park. During a dry period like we had this spring and early summer, the trees are not able to take in the water and nutrients they need, and they decline and die before any remedial action can be effective. The number of trees affected is small, but we love our trees, and it is sad to lose them when we thought it was all over.

‘Till next time…
