Contra Dancing begins October 15

Contra DanceContra Dancing is a form of North American folk dance in which the dancers form two sets of parallel lines which run the length of the hall. Each dance consists of a sequence of moves that ends with couples having progressed one position up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, a couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set.

Contra Dancing was all the rage in 1800. Many of the basic moves in Contra Dancing are similar to those in square dancing (swings, promenades, dos-a-dos, allemandes). A square dance set comprises only four couples whereas the number of couples in a Contra Dance set is limited only by the length of the hall. To join a set, all you need is a partner. If you have danced squares, you will enjoy Contras immediately.

In Contra Dancing, your feet are never asked to do more than walk to the music. Each dance is taught by the caller before it is danced. The caller continues to prompt the dancers as needed. Because the pattern of moves of each Contra Dance is repeated often, Contra Dances are easy to learn. Both beginning and experienced dancers happily share the same set.

Contra Dances have a relaxed, family-like atmosphere where the emphasis is on dancing. Contra Dancing is excellent exercise that you can take at your own pace. Above all, Contra Dancers form a community of friendly, active people and they welcome new dancers, be they youngsters or seniors. Most dancers range from 25 to 70 years old.

What if I don’t have a partner? No problem. Many people come to a Contra Dance alone. Dancers are encouraged to dance with many different partners throughout the evening. Come check it out Oct. 15th at 1:00pm in the Clubhouse. Hope to see you at a dance!

Golf News & Tournament, Oct 14

Golf ClubWell, we made it through another summer and we’re still golfing at the Cove. Our next tournament is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th with sign-up at 9:30 and a 10:00 tee-time. Prize money will be the same and entry fees are the same: members $8.00 and non-members $10.00. We’ll have the usual soft drinks, beer and something to eat. Hope to see you there.

Hey, I am the last one to know but I’ve been praising Mike Joy for the work he has done on the ninth green. It turns out that Ray, Ron and Ed dug up the green and replaced it with excellent professional sod compliments of someone. It is great and we still owe thanks to the whole bunch, including Mike for the hard work they have done.

That’s about it. See you on the 14th and happy golfing.

Singles Weekend & New Singles Club by Rene Ward

Cypress Cove SinglesAugust 18-20, 2006 brought another successful Singles Weekend to Cypress Cove. Singles from all over attended, including some first time attendees. Festivities including a cocktail party, a meet and greet on Friday night at the Lakeside Lounge, and a Friday night Streak at Cheeks, were fairly well attended.

Saturday’s pool party with DJ Glenn consisted of some great music and games for the singles. Participants of the games received tickets for a drawing later that day at the cocktail party. The winner received a certificate for a free night in the Villas. That night, Regis and staff gave us a wonderful Toga party, which was also attended by a number of residents and non-singles, making for a wonderful time for everyone. It was nice to see a number of young nudists in attendance as well, one of whom was the winner of the Toga contest. A thank you and job well done to all, Regis our activities leader, wait staff and bartenders, Tabitha and Kara.

At Saturday’s cocktail party a discussion was held and a new group has been formed out of this Singles Weekend… the “Cypress Cove Singles”. Having been brought up at the Members Meeting the month before by Dee Nader, discussed and approval by Mr. Hadley, then presented to and discussed by the singles in attendance at this years weekend, we now have an “official” singles “club” at Cypress Cove. Dan Inman serves as the groups webmaster, Ruth Russel its volunteer “president” and Rene Ward its volunteer “secretary”. To date we have approximately 20-30 “members/interested singles” signed up and hopefully there will be others of you out there who might want to “join us” or at least contact us with an interest in finding out more. There will be meetings held monthly on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Lakeside Lounge, and we will be having a singles dinner at 5:30 pm at Lakeside. Please plan to attend, we want your ideas and input. Please contact Regis at the Cypress Cove office if you plan to attend so that he can inform the gate as well as have a count of the number of attendees Thank you all for your support and participation.

Rene Ward, Secretary CCS
